New Year, New Attacks Against Adobe Zero-Day

Crooks are once again exploiting the zero-day hole in Adobe Reader and Acrobat to install a remote-control Trojan on victim machines. The attacks start with a malicious .pdf that the Internet Storm Center has analyzed in depth . The ISC is a volunteer organization that tracks Internet attacks. As the ISC notes, "malicious PDF documents are not rare these days," and attacks typically attach them to e-mails. But targeted attacks only sent to a small number of victims are often missed by security... Detailt »»

Thinner Laptops, 3D TV Look Set to Headline Show

Thinner laptops, 3D television and e-book readers are expected to be among the highlights of this year's International Consumer Electronics Show that begins in Las Vegas on Thursday. The event, which serves as an annual kick-off for the world's electronics industry, is expected to attract around 110,000 people, on par with last year. The show will be noticeably smaller than 2009 occupying only the Las Vegas Convention Center complex and not, for the first time in five years, the nearby Sands Expo.... Detailt »»

Google’s Chrome Tops Safari; Is Firefox Next?

Google Chrome hit a milestone over the weekend when it became the third-most popular browser after Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, according to metrics firm Net Applications. It controls just 4.63 percent of the browser market, but Chrome has made significant inroads against competing browsers, such as the former bronze medalist Apple Safari. It's not hard to see why Chrome is gaining ground. Consider its recently launched versions for Mac and Linux, and the introduction... Detailt »»

Troubleshooting Over the Holidays

Thanks to the seasonal generosity of Macworld's overlords and some accumulated days-off that needed to be used or losed, I've spent the last two weeks officially away from the keyboard. Unofficially, however, the questions continued to pour in--both from outside sources and from sources much closer to home. Here are the greatest hits of the season: Silent mic From my mother, during a recent visit to her desert abode: Mom: I'm trying to use Skype to talk to your sister but she can't hear me. Is... Detailt »»

Manage OS X’s Downloaded File Warning System

When Apple shipped Mac OS X 10.5, one of the new features was a warning about opening downloaded files (this feature is also present in Mac OS X 10.6). The first time open you such a file, a dialog appears, asking if you're sure you want to open the file, because it was downloaded from the Internet. The idea behind this feature is a good one--as a user, you should know when you're launching a program that's been downloaded, just in case it was somehow downloaded without your knowledge. In practice,... Detailt »»

Facebook Cuts Off Access to Profile-Killing Service

Deleting your Facebook profile is easy. Just follow the link and submit your request. But merely disappearing from Facebook might not be cathartic enough for people who've grown to despise social networking. For them, there was the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine, a service that didn't just delete Facebook profiles, it actually disemboweled them. Until now. The operators of SuicideMachine.org claim ( via the L.A. Times ) that Facebook is blocking the Web app's IP address, making it impossible... Detailt »»

Everplay Features Last.fm, Cover Flow

iTunes is a great app, but sometimes it can be overkill. Even if you shrink it, the enormous window seems to demand all of your attention and it can take a while to start up--annoying if you just want to play that one song or movie on the side. Snarb.tk on Monday released an alternative media player with some extra perks called Everplay , and you don't even have to drop iTunes to use it. Everplay is kind of an "iTunes mini." It uses an extremely small window by default and provides quick access... Detailt »»
