Sohu Revenues Up 12% in Q4 2009

Sohu reported its Q4 2009 earnings this morning and the news is good for the Chinese Internet portal. (Sohu is basically China's Yahoo!) Revenues came in at $135.8 million and were up 12% compared to Q4 2008. Specifically, brand advertising revenues were up 2%, coming in at $45.9 million. While Sohu tried to paint the picture as being on target with their guidance, Wall Street wasn't thrilled with the numbers. Stocks were down 0.7% at the time of this post. Perhaps their disappointment is due to... Detailt »»

Chinese Censorship Strong Despite Google

The Internet has loosened the control Chinese authorities hold over information in the country, but censorship there will remain strong despite Google's threat to leave China. Chinese authorities say the Internet could be used to threaten social stability, a vague but paramount concern voiced by officials, and they have launched a range of campaigns in the past year to eradicate online content seen as "harmful." Twitter-style Web sites and others in China have helped Internet users post their... Detailt »»

What Google Attacks Can Teach the Enterprise

The cyberattacks against Google and more than 30 other technology companies by adversaries operating out of China highlights what some call the Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) confronting a growing number of U.S commercial entities. The term has been used for some time in government and military domains to describe targeted cyberattacks carried out by highly organized state-sponsored groups with deep technical skills and computing resources. Such attacks are typically highly targeted, stealthy,... Detailt »»

Bill Gates Calls Chinese Censorship "Very Limited"

Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates told ABC's Good Morning America that Chinese censorship is "very limited" and "easy to go around." He appeared to take a veiled swipe at Google as well. Gates may be the world's greatest philanthropist, but when it comes to China, he's simply wrong. According to Reuters , Gates said about China: "You've got to decide: Do you want to obey the laws of the countries you're in, or not? If not, you may not end up doing business there." "The Chinese efforts... Detailt »»

Maybe Google Won’t Quit China After All

Despite its recent threats to shut down its China-based operations , Google may in fact keep some of its businesses open there. According to a Fox News report, the search giant is conducting "delicate" talks with the Chinese government. The two sides are discussing ways that Google can maintain its research center, an advertising sales team, and Google's new mobile phone business in China, the report states. Don't Be Evil Google created an international incident earlier this month... Detailt »»

China Says No Limits on Google’s Android If It Follows Laws

China on Wednesday said Google's Android operating system will not be blocked if it follows local regulations, after speculation that Google's threat to leave China could hurt the adoption of Android there. Google last week said it had postponed the launch in China of two mobile phones using Android, in an example of how its row with the government there could affect its businesses beyond just its China-based search engine. China will not limit the use of any operating system as long as it conforms... Detailt »»

Google, IP Struggles Fuel US Business Concerns in China

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday warned that China must become more transparent and predictable, as a row between Google and China drew concern about the business environment there for foreign companies. Recent intellectual property rules that could block foreign companies from winning Chinese government contracts, followed by Google's threat this month to leave China due to hacking and censorship, have put a spotlight on the tough regulations often faced by U.S. companies in China.... Detailt »»

Google Yanks IE6 Support

Google has announced that Google Docs will drop support for Microsoft's nearly nine-year-old Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) browser starting on March 1. Ironically, if Google had taken its anti-IE6 advice to heart before hackers broke into its corporate network last year, it might not now be mulling whether to abandon the Chinese search market. "We're going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites," said Rajen Sheth, senior product manager for Google Apps,... Detailt »»

China Tablet PC Maker May Sue Apple Over IPad Design

A Chinese company that sells a tablet PC like Apple's newly announced iPad may sue the U.S. company over the similar design between the devices, it said Monday. Shenzhen Great Loong Brother Industrial started selling its P88 tablet last year and is not ruling out a lawsuit against Apple, a company representative surnamed Wu said by phone.
