China Says No Limits on Google’s Android If It Follows Laws

China on Wednesday said Google's Android operating system will not be blocked if it follows local regulations, after speculation that Google's threat to leave China could hurt the adoption of Android there. Google last week said it had postponed the launch in China of two mobile phones using Android, in an example of how its row with the government there could affect its businesses beyond just its China-based search engine. China will not limit the use of any operating system as long as it conforms... Detailt »»

Apple’s iPad and the Flash Clash

Apple's iPad has been surrounded by debate since its debut this week. Now, the heavily hyped tablet is at the center of a controversy that's reaching the federal government. This latest iPad beef isn't about the device's frequently mocked name or any surrounding trademark concerns ; rather, it's about the iPad's apparent lack of Flash support . Product demos and statements from Adobe suggest the device is not Flash-friendly -- but Apple's promotional materials paint a very different picture.... Detailt »»

Cisco Offers Olive Branch to Videoconference Rivals

Cisco Systems has gotten the ball rolling toward interoperability among all high-end videoconferencing platform by licensing the Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP) to other vendors, but the ability to plug any two systems together may be a long way off, according to vendors and analysts. Cisco introduced its first Telepresence Meeting System, a high-definition videoconferencing system with 1080p video, in 2006. But other vendors were already selling platforms with immersive and high-quality... Detailt »»

Music Piracy Case will Go to Round 3

The long music piracy fight between the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Minnesota native Jammie Thomas-Rasset shows no sign of ending anytime soon. RIAA spokeswoman Cara Duckworth last week said the industry association is beginning preparations for a third trial in the case after Thomas-Rasset rejected a $25,000 settlement offer it made earlier this week. In an e-mailed comment, Duckworth expressed regret at Thomas-Rasset's refusal. "It is a shame that Ms. Thomas-Rasset... Detailt »»

OpenFeint Sees IPad as Transformative Gaming Platform

Apple's new iPad will usher in a new era for mobile devices--and quite possibly, mobile gaming. OpenFeint , one of the major developers in the iPhone gaming industry, is looking forward to the iPad. Peter Relan, chairman of OpenFeint, discussed with Macworld what he believes to be a huge leap forward for the industry. "Larger screen means everything...the kind of games that you can play changes dramatically." Currently, OpenFeint has 900 live games in the App Store, and since the iPad uses the... Detailt »»

Apple Inside: the Significance of the IPad’s A4 Chip

Just one day after the unveiling of the iPad , Apple's long-rumored tablet has ruffled feathers and turned heads. With a familiar interface, Apple's momentum, iTunes integration, and a price that the even non-geek can easily fall in love with, it has all the makings of a hit. But deep inside lies something even more revolutionary. At the heart of the iPad lies a tiny sliver of silicon . A game changer within a game changer. That's Apple's A4, a system-on-a-chip (SoC) that reportedly combines... Detailt »»

The IPad’s Future Shock

[The following is excerpted with permission from the blog of independent software developer Fraser Speirs' blog at speirs.org.] I can't help being struck by the volume and vehemence of apparently technologically sophisticated people inveighing against the iPad . Some are trying to dismiss these ravings by comparing them to certain comments made after the launch of the iPod in 2001: "No wireless. Less space than a Nomad. Lame." I fear this January-26th thinking misses the point. What you're seeing... Detailt »»

It’s "courses for horses" at SES London 2010

Image by SESConferenceSeries via Flickr Last year, I posted an item to the Search Engine Watch blog entitled, " It's 'Horses for Courses' at SES London 2009 ." I said business professionals may want to bring a team to Search Engine Strategies London - because there will be three concurrent conference tracks and no business professional will be able to attend all of the sessions. But, upon reflection, I should have said it's "courses for horses," because each of the three tracks of the leading... Detailt »»

Thinner Laptops, 3D TV Look Set to Headline Show

Thinner laptops, 3D television and e-book readers are expected to be among the highlights of this year's International Consumer Electronics Show that begins in Las Vegas on Thursday. The event, which serves as an annual kick-off for the world's electronics industry, is expected to attract around 110,000 people, on par with last year. The show will be noticeably smaller than 2009 occupying only the Las Vegas Convention Center complex and not, for the first time in five years, the nearby Sands Expo.... Detailt »»
